We lost our livelihood or less lost and more had it taken from us
So our second time vending at the Steampunk World’s Fair was not so wonderful. We hardly made enough to cover expenses, it was nice because SPG was just across the room from us, and the costumes where great that we saw but other than that the weekend was not a good one. We are goldsmiths and everything we had was handmade by my father, this is his life and someone decided to take it. We packed up and took caution like we always do, but what can you do when someone has planned how to rob you? We stopped at a reststop for dinner, parking and locking the car. When we got back out I opened my door, and I thought dad had already unlocked it because he often has unlocked the car as I walk up to it, but he hadn’t. I noticed somethings where right in the back seat, and was about to ask my dad when he opened the back to get something out and said “Where is the jewelry?”. Who ever robbed us knew exactly what to take, they didn’t take laptops or mess with anything, they grabbed the two bags with our stock and left. The police explained how they would have done it and are going to do their best to help us try to recover our lost product, all our pieces are marked with an REP stamp and the year it was made. We lost over 70% of our stock, that is a lot for us…we don’t have much money we are a family businesses. It is really hard to see what this has done to my father, because this is his art, some of those pieces he spent days to weeks on. He just kept talking about the beautiful stones he had used. I don’t know how long it will take us to recover, it is going to be a lot of work remaking our stock and buying the silver and gold to use to make everything again. No one was hurt, and that is what I am grateful for, that they chose to rob us while we were not in the car. We will recover from this, but we will likely never return to the Steampunk World’s Fair. Also I want all of you to think about this the next time you steal a song online or something small from a store, doing that makes you no better than the people who chose to take our livelihood away from us. You are hurting people, people lose their income from those small things you steal, people lose their jobs, stores raise prices to make up for the losses.
If you were at SPWF, please take a look at this user’s blog. They have pictures of the stamps on the jewelry stolen from them following SPWF as well as information on how to help. I know a lot of you went through and saw some of the amazing items offered by the vendors at the convention, if you know anything or can signal boost please do. Having your livelihood threatened is horrible and no one deserves this, let’s do what we can to help.
